Amy Barker Profile

I am a newly qualified practitioner who has started completing her competencies. My career goal is to further develop my skills as a Speech and Language Therapist and to specialise in areas that interest me. I have had a variety of placement experiences during university.

I have had placement opportunities in areas such as:

Children – cleft palate, speech sound delays / disorders, language delays / impairments, stammering, autism, swallowing difficulties and learning difficulties.

Adults – dysphagia / swallowing difficulties, traumatic brain injury, expressive and receptive aphasia, stroke and dementia.

My areas of interest are aphasia, stammering and traumatic brain injury in adults. For children, I am interested in stammering, speech sound delays / disorders and autism.

I have a stammer; it’s something I’ve always had. It is genetic in my family history, however I am the first girl to present with a stammer, which is uncommon (the ratio for stammering is 4:1 – boys:girls). I received Speech and Language Therapy for 10 years for my stammer (I was able to have placement experience in the same NHS trust that I received Speech Therapy in, which was great).

I chose to become a Speech and Language Therapist to support and inspire people with speech, language and communication difficulties, using my own experiences as a person who stammers to develop relationships with my clients and build a higher self esteem for people who need support with speech, language and communication.

I have two cats which I adore spending time with. I enjoy reading in my spare time. I also have interests in skincare, make-up and history (particularly Ancient Egypt and Ancient Rome). I enjoy the gym when I’m motivated. I am also interested in societal issues e.g. feminism.

The EG Training team have been incredibly welcoming and lovely as I transition to a newly qualified professional. I endeavour to utilise the support given by my colleagues as I now embark on this career path and embrace every opportunity.
