Taster Workshop
Recommended for
People who are interested either in finding out about Makaton or with a view to attending a Level 1 Workshop at a later date.
Learning Outcomes
- Develop awareness of the use of non verbal communication.
- Experience the feelings and emotions associated with a communication difficulty.
- “What is Makaton?”
- Find out how Makaton can help communication to be more meaningful and effective for individuals with communication difficulties.
- Learn the signs and symbols for 20 everyday concepts plus further signs tailored to your specific needs.
- Learn about key word signing.
- Develop ability to use the signs and symbols learnt in this workshop in own environment.
- Find out about Makaton resources available to support users learning and further Makaton training available.
Course content
This session provides a general insight into what Makaton is and who uses it with the added opportunity to learn some starter signs and symbols too! This fun and interactive session also provides the opportunity to discuss ideas on how you could use Makaton. Participants receive digital handouts covering the vocabulary they have learned and general information regarding further Makaton training and Makaton resources.

Level 1
Recommended for
This introductory workshop is for people who need to use Makaton signing or symbols at home or in their work.
Learning Outcomes
- Have the ability to sign in everyday situations
- Know stages 1-2 with some additional
- Know when to use Makaton symbols
- Have an understanding of how to implement Makaton for their own use
Course content
Level 1 training provides a practical introduction to the Makaton Language Programme. Sessions include discussing commonly asked questions, hints and tips for effective signing and symbol use and how to start using Makaton in everyday situations at home or work. You will also learn the signs and symbols from Stages 1 and 2, and some of the Additional stage, of the Core Vocabulary.
Study materials
For the Level 1 workshop you will receive a Participant’s Manual which includes the Makaton symbols and signs that you learn in the workshop. If this training is delivered online, we will post the manual to you but only after you have acknowledged our Zoom meeting details which are emailed to you after you have booked, so please look out for this and let us know if you don’t receive it.
For all workshops you will be given a certificate of attendance. Please remember to keep your certificate in case you want to attend further Makaton training.

Level 2
Recommended for
Family members, carers and workers who need to use Makaton signing and/or symbols at home or in their work and for those who have completed Makaton level 1 training.

- Have the ability to sign in everyday situations
- Know stages 3-4 with the remaining additional
- Know when to use Makaton symbols
- Have an understanding of how to implement Makaton for their own use
Course content
You will learn the signs and symbols from Stages 3 and 4, and the rest of the Additional stage, of the Core Vocabulary.
Study materials
For the Level 2 workshop you will receive a Participant’s Manual which includes the Makaton symbols and signs that you learn in the workshop. - Know how to develop a users communication skills
Course content
Level 3 training helps you to improve and develop your signing and symbol skills and how to use them effectively every day. You will revise the signs and symbols you learned in your Level 1 and 2 training, and learn the signs and symbols for Stages 5 and 6 of the Core Vocabulary.

For the Level 3 workshop you will receive a Participant’s Manual which includes the Makaton symbols and signs that you learn in the workshop. Level 4

People who have attended Makaton Level 3 and wish to continue their Makaton learning.

Course content
Level 4 training completes the Core Vocabulary. You will revise the signs and symbols you learned in your Level 1, 2 and 3 training, and learn the signs and symbols for Stages 7 and 8 of the Core Vocabulary.

When and Where
Training delivered online using the videoconferencing tool ‘Zoom’, you will need to sign up for the free package on Zoom, have a broadband internet connection and computer with web cam, microphone and speakers. Please contact us if you are unsure about this.
Training delivered at our training room in the Midlands includes free parking, ample training space for up to 25 people, break out room with toilet and kitchen facilities plus refreshments are provided. Full AV equipment is also available.
