TalkTools® Sensory Bean Bags are designed to provide facial massage and to expose clients to a variety of textures in a playful, non-threatening manner. They should be incorporated into your pre-feeding program (see the course Feeding Therapy: A Sensory-Motor Approach). These fun and safe tools can be used with clients with hyposensitivity (under response) or hypersensitivity (over response) to touch/texture on the face, and clients who do not have adequate facial symmetry or midline orientation.

Nose Clips are excellent for those situations where the client you are working with cannot differentiate between oral and nasal airflow to successfully say a word that combines oral and nasal speech sounds. It affects many clients with motor planning disorders, particularly: velo-pharyngeal insufficiency, repaired cleft-hypernasality, post-sphynctoplasty-hypernasality, Apraxia and Dyspraxia. The nose clips can be used to teach the motor plan for controlled oral airflow by adding a tactile cue to assist in the process. This activity can be used with the Pre-Hierarchy Horn to teach horn blowing or bubble blowing when airflow is directed out of the nose, rather than the mouth, during these activities.

The goal of a pre-feeding program is to develop the oral sensory motor skills to support safe, effective and nutritive feeding. This introductory kit is an excellent way to begin implementing OPT (Oral Placement Therapy) techniques. The program addresses oral-motor issues that impact children and adult clients ability to speak, eat and drink independently. This OPT (Oral Placement Therapy) activity addresses one of the components of drooling: weak lip closure. In addition, many clients who present interdental tongue protrusion during function have weak lip strength. For example, they may suckle on a straw rather than use lip protrusion with tongue retraction to draw up the liquid. Others may use their teeth or scrape purees from a spoon rather than removing the puree with their lips. As a result, the lips rest in an open mouth posture. This exercise will address those clients and will also develop strength in the orbicularis-oris muscle as a prerequisite for standard speech sound production of: / w, o, u, (sh), (ch), (j) /.

The Drooling Remediation Program has a step-by-step approach that does not focus on behaviour but rather addresses the cause of drooling with a new set of eyes, Oral Placement Therapy. Possible areas of saliva control deficit include: body posture, sensory awareness, lip closure and saliva retraction.
